The livery and car number that Volkswagen will utilize on its I.D. R prototype in this month’s Pikes Peak International Hill Climb has been revealed, ahead of further testing in preparation for the world-famous event.
Romain Dumas will carry No. 94, with the all-electric vehicle sporting a grey livery, which is the hallmark color of the I.D. family.
“As is standard in American motor racing, the organizers allowed us to select our own start number,” explained Volkswagen Motorsport Director Sven Smeets.
“The 94 was our express wish, as it symbolizes the letters ‘I’ and ‘D’ – the ninth and fourth letters in the alphabet.”
The I.D. R marks Volkswagen’s first all-electric project, and the figurehead of the manufacturer’s future line of electric production cars, which will be launched beginning in 2020.
Dumas has a busy schedule between now and the June 24 event, with the 40-year-old returning to Le Mans this weekend in preparations for next weekend’s French endurance classic, where he will drive a Porsche 911 RSR.
He will then fly directly back to Colorado, with the first practice session at Pikes Peak scheduled for Tues. June 19, and qualifying on Wednesday.
