Vittorio Ghirelli was crowned 2019 smart EQ fortwo e-cup champion on Sunday after a pair of second-place finishes in the day’s two season-ending races at Adria.
Mercedes-Benz Rome driver Ghirelli becomes Italian motorsport federation ACI Sport’s inaugural alternative energies champion, owing to the smart e-cup’s new status as the official Italian electric racing championship.
The 25-year-old previously raced in GP2, GP3, Formula Renault 3.5 and Indy Lights before moving to the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series this year.
“It is a great feeling and an honor to be the first driver in the history of ACI Sport to be able to boast an electric title,” said Ghirelli.
“Being able to do it by wearing the colors of Mercedes-Benz Roma and 2easyRent makes this wonderful day simply incomparable.
“It was a tough season where I tried never to push too hard and always bring the maximum home. I matured, I was consistent and in the end I took home the title of the smart EQ fortwo e-cup!”
The race wins in the final two rounds of the season went to Riccardo Azzoli and Fulvio Ferri, who ultimately placed second and third in the final championship standings.
Race 1 winner Azzoli picked up more race wins than any other driver this year and went on to finish third in Race 2.
2018 champion Ferri claimed victory in Race 2 while a tense battle played out behind him that resulted in Azzoli moving from seventh on the grid to second.
Azzoli had to give up his runner-up position to Ghirelli on the last lap, allowing the eventual champion to solidify his result.
