Vittorio Ghirelli and Piergiorgio Capra claimed victory in last weekend’s penultimate round of the smart EQ fortwo e-cup at Magione, with Ghirelli increasing his championship lead.
The two drivers came out on top amongst an expanded 21-car field for the Italian single-make electric touring car series at Magione’s Autodromo dell’Umbria in central Italy.
Mercedes-Benz Roma’s Ghirelli took a strong lead early in Race 1 from pole position, surviving attacks from Giuseppe de Pasquale, who moved from fifth to second with a rapid getaway.
De Pasquale, driving for RSTAR Palermo, repeatedly made attempts to pass Ghirelli but was unsuccessful for the entire race and had to settle for runner-up position, 0.5 seconds down at the line.
Michele Spoldi completed the podium by defending in a close battle with Fulvio Ferri, Riccardo Azzoli and debutant Eddi la Marra, meanwhile.
Lorenzo Longo started from pole in Race 2, with the grid decided by the reverse of Race 1’s top eight finishers, while Capra got away from second position.
Team Novelli 1934’s Longo had a strong start but was soon passed by Capra and la Marra. The latter made attempts to take the lead from Capra but couldn’t make a move stick.
This allowed Capra to win by 0.239 seconds over la Marra, while Azzoli took advantage of the lead brawl to close in and secure third position in a photo finish for the top three cars.
Ghirelli finished fourth, taking home a strong points finish to give him a total of 190, while Azzoli slots in second on 154, ahead of de Pasquale’s 134. A total of 59 points are up for grabs in next month’s season finale at Adria.
