The first two drivers have been confirmed for the upcoming smart EQ fortwo e-cup season, with frontrunners Giuseppe De Pasquale and Lorenzo Longo returning for another campaign.

The two drivers have recently committed to another season in the ACI Sport Italian Alternative Energy Speed Championship, becoming the first to confirm solid plans.

Both are supported by Mercedes-Benz and smart dealers: De Pasquale by RStar Palermo in Sicily, and Longo by Genoa’s Novelli 1934.

De Pasquale finished third in the standings last year but failed to take a race win, while Longo placed eighth after winning twice.

“I am very happy to be able to defend the colors of RStar Palermo again this year, a city very dear to me,” commented De Pasquale.

“The final goal is certainly the title, but from the first race I will try for my first victory in the smart e-cup.”

Longo added: “Last season we achieved great results and that’s where we want to start again, I want to win as many races as possible. The rest will come by itself.

“This is a particular year, both for the total electrification of the smart range and, above all, for Genoa and Italy, ready to rise again after a decidedly difficult period.

“I will do everything to make them proud of me, I want to dedicate my season to them.”

Racing Delayed Due to COVID-19

The championship is set to get underway later than planned due to the COVID-19 pandemic which has hit Italy harder than any other European country.

Series organizer LPD Italia released a six-round calendar last month, featuring rounds at five Italian circuits beginning at Magione on April 18-19.

The Magione opener is yet to be officially canceled but it is highly unlikely that it will go ahead on the planned date.

ACI Sport has currently suspended all races until April 3, but this is expected to be extended.

“As soon as the conditions allow us to get back on track with maximum safety, the smart e-cup is ready to give life to a new electrifying edition of the ACI Sport Italian Alternative Energy Speed Championship,” read a statement from the series, released on Monday.
