Fulvio Ferri and Lorenzo Longo each took home a victory as the all-electric smart EQ fortwo e-cup visited Misano World Circuit for its third and fourth rounds of the season.
Ferri engaged in an exciting sprint finish in Race 1 to lead Riccardo Azzoli to the line by 0.178 seconds on Saturday evening, scoring his second win of the season for Team Merfina.
Vittorio Ghirelli led the field from pole position, while a battle for second played out between Azzoli, Gianluca Carboni and Michele Spoldi.
This allowed Ferri and Giuseppe De Pasquale to make up ground while Azzoli and Carboni took turns leading the race.
The four drivers ended up engaged in a lead battle for the rest of the race, repeatedly overtaking each other until reigning champion was able to hold on for a narrow victory on the final lap.
De Pasquale completed the podium behind Azzoli, while Carboni settled for fourth.
The race was interrupted midway through by a safety car period called following an accident between Franco Gallina and Silvia Sellani.
In Sunday morning’s Race 2, Lorenzo Longo made an impressive maneuver on the final corner to beat De Pasquale to the win.
Longo took the lead on the second lap by passing early leader Marco Panzavuota, and the Team Novelli 1934 driver remained out front for the rest of the 15-minute race until the final lap.
De Pasquale finally caught up with Longo on the last lap and the pair traded the lead several times, until Longo made a last-minute pass on the inside at the final corner.
He crossed the line almost a second clear of De Pasquale. Carboni finished second on track, separating Longo and De Pasquale at the line, but was relegated to 11th due to an infringement at the start.
De Pasquale now leads the championship heading to the next rounds at Adria on July 6-7, with Ferri four points behind.
The Race 1 winner crossed the line in fifth but, along with Carboni, lost positions to a post-race penalty and was classified in ninth.
