Aurelien Panis won the opening round of the Trophee Andros ice racing championship with a new electric car at Val Thorens on Saturday.

He drove a ‘Plastic’Up’-entered electric car run by Blancpain GT Series and GT4 team Sainteloc Racing, beating several internal combustion engine cars in the process.

The series’ new electric silhouette cars feature four-wheel drive and four-wheel steering while producing around 250 kW of power.

Three electric cars were entered, driven by Panis, Franck Lagorce and Nico Prost, competing directly against ten ICE cars.

Lagorce finished the race third in his Andros Sport car, behind Olivier Pernaut in a Sainteloc-entered, gas-powered Mazda 3.

“I’m really happy about this first day at Val Thorens, I did not expect to be so well placed, we won the heats, the Super Pole and Race 1,” said Panis.

“The Sainteloc Racing team has done an amazing job, we hope to continue this momentum.”

A separate class, reserved entirely for electric cars and named the Enedis Andros Electric Trophy, was also contested, featuring cars producing 90 kW of power and running with rear-wheel drive.

It was won by Christophe Ferrier, who led the way in both qualifying rounds and the final race.

The second day of running was cancelled due to poor weather conditions but the championship will be back in action on Dec. 21-22 in Andorra.
