Daimler’s supermini brand Smart has launched its EV race series this weekend with the first of five events across Italy taking place at Misano.
The Smart EQ ForTwo E-Cup has gotten underway as part of the support package for the Blancpain GT Series Sprint Cup round at the circuit on the eastern Italian coast.
Further rounds will be held at Vallelunga, Mugello and on city-center circuits in Turin and Milan later this year.
Sixteen cars are on the starting grid with all competitors using the all-electric Smart EQ ForTwo, the zero-emission variant of the Daimler-run supermini brand.
The series is organized by Lug Prince & Decker (LPD), which has previously worked with the AMG Driving Academy Italia.
It was first announced at the ABB FIA Formula E Championship Rome E-Prix in April, for which Mercedes EQ was the title sponsor.
Demonstration events have since taken place at the Valentino Park Motor Show in Turin and Zurich E-Prix.
The series will get underway with a pair of 20-minute sprint races at Misano on Sunday.
