Entry-Level Electric Open-Wheel Series to Launch in 2020

An entry-level electric formula racing series, named the ERA Championship, is set to debut in summer 2020 as part of a partnership with Japanese chassis manufacturer Dome.

The series will include races in Belgium, the Netherlands and the UK and a two-class format that will give teams the option to develop their own powertrain and energy storage systems.

The car, which has a chassis designed by Dome, will be revealed in June but several details have already been released, including that it will have a 130 kW motor, and a 24 kWh battery capacity.

ERA’s inaugural season will include a minimum of two test events and eight races of 23 minutes in length with a calendar set to be revealed at the end of 2019.

Teams can compete with the standard chassis in the Sports class or race in the Innovation class where they can develop unique powertrain and energy storage systems.

The body behind the initiative is Belgian motorsports group The Driving Force, which has run the BMW Motorrad Factory Race Team, Porsche factory-backed team Prospeed Competition and organizes the Porsche Carrera Cup Benelux.

“It is our goal with ERA Championship to launch an accessible electric racing platform, that creates opportunities for up-and-coming drivers, whilst also inspiring technical innovation on track,” said the championship’s technical and business director Dieter Vanswijgenhoven (pictured above with Dome F110 monocoque).

“Alongside our partners Dome we are able to achieve our innovation and accessibility goals, and are highly anticipating the reveal of our car this Summer.”

Dome president Takuya Takahashi added: “This is a great opportunity knowing that our F110 chassis will hit the ground of Europe for the first time.

“Furthermore, it is also for the first time that our F110 chassis is utilised in an electric racing series with unique regulations that enable the entrant to develop their own powertrain.

“We are looking forward to entrants’ innovative developments on the energy storage system and indeed the powertrains.

“We are proud to be providing the base for the future of racing, utilising our years of experience of chassis development.”
