Volkswagen set the new overall record time at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb with its I.D. R Pikes Peak electric prototype driven by Romain Dumas on Sunday.

Dumas posted a time of 7:57.148 on the 12.42-mile circuit in Colorado to beat the standing record by 16 seconds.

The German manufacturer’s initial target was to set a new record time for electric cars but Dumas’ run was one minute quicker than the existing EV benchmark.

“This is a fantastic day for Volkswagen and one, of which we are very proud,” said Volkswagen Motorsport Director Sven Smeets.

“The I.D. R Pikes Peak is the most innovative and complex car ever developed by Volkswagen Motorsport.

“Every employee involved in the Pikes Peak project has constantly had to push their boundaries and show extreme commitment and dedication.

“Without this, it would not have been possible to repeatedly overcome new challenges and come up with new solutions.

“It should actually be impossible to achieve all that and especially the all-time record in such a short time, but our team pulled it off thanks to their passion and commitment.

“Thank you to everyone who worked so hard on the project and showed such fantastic team spirit.”

Dumas posted the quickest time in qualifying on Wednesday which decided the running order for the attempts on Sunday morning.

The Volkswagen entry was the first car to tackle the infamous Pikes Peak course shortly after 10 a.m. local time.

He beat Sebastien Loeb’s existing overall record of 8:13.878.

“We exceeded even our own high expectations with that result,” Dumas said. “Since this week’s tests, we have known that it was possible to break the all-time record.

“For it to come off, everything had to come together perfectly – from the technology to the driver. And the weather had to play ball too.

“That everything ran so smoothly is an incredible feeling, and the new record on Pikes Peak is the icing on the cake. I still cannot believe that Volkswagen and my name are behind this incredible time.

“The I.D. R Pikes Peak is the most impressive car I have ever driven in competition. The electric drivetrain means that many things are different and I learned a lot during the project.

“The team did an indescribably meticulous, yet at the same time relaxed, job. Not only did we get the desired result, but the team spirit was also spot on.

“I am incredibly proud to have been a part of it.”

Great achievement! Thats a hell of a time! But another proof that you can`t trust a single word from VW (quote something like “we surely not fast enough for the overall record”) ;P

But not a suprise at all to me. I always thought since 2016 that Loeb wasn´t quite on the limit when I was watching his onboard run… and with the electrics not loosing any power in height, thats the result.

Mods? Please don’t let this site turn into:

      Realize they’re stoopid.

Mod “greeniessuck” now, and then mod my post. Don’t think ignoring this will make it go away.

Commenters I mean. Racer Journalists are excellent high quality journalists who do an excellent job on that site, I apologize completely for including them in my criticism of the lack of modding of their comments on electric racing.

To be fair, someone that took the time to fill in his email just for the sake of commenting “yawn” isn’t really worth the time.

I love the Pikes Peak race as a bastion of ruleless fight in motorsport! Vehicles weird and wonderful.
