Former rally driver Natalie Barratt has become the first driver confirmed for the new Projekt E electric rallycross series that gets underway this year.
The 45-year-old Brit will make her racing return in the Projekt E opener at Spa-Francorchamps after almost a decade away from racing, but has considerable rally experience under her belt.
Regularly competing between 1996 and 2011, Barratt started her career on the British rally scene before graduating to the FIA World Rally Championship, in which she competed at 44 rounds.
Barratt will drive a Ford Fiesta this year for a currently unknown team. Her entry follows on from commitments by Holten Motorsport and Rallytechnology.
“Projekt E is a fantastic opportunity and I’m hugely grateful to be part of it,” she said. “And what better date to announce my participation than on International Women’s Day?
“I am looking to complete all five rounds – depending on budget. At moment I am concentrating on getting physically prepared – it’s been a long time since I sat in a race car.
“It’s electric and it’s mind-blowingly fast. What more could you ask for? I’ll be testing the Projekt E race car for the first time later this month.”
