Opel has started development of the Corsa-e Rally, its electric rally car that will form the basis of a single-make German series that gets underway in August 2020.
The testing program at the Dudenhofen Test Center is currently focused on durability and reliability with the two current test prototypes, and will shift to the car’s performance in the next stage.
A reference car will later be built based on findings during the current development stage, and will serve as a template for customer vehicles. Around 20 cars are set to be built for the initial batch to compete beginning in the summer.
The Corsa-e Rally produces 100 kW (136 hp) using the same battery as the production car, which has a 50 kWh storage capacity and a range of 210 miles.
The rally car will run on three modes to maximize range, including a competition mode with full power and torque, a rain mode to more effectively deliver torque on slippery surfaces, and an eco mode to save energy while driving between stages and to service.
Single-Make Series Set for August Debut
Opel’s rally car will initially race in a single-make rally series in Germany, with eight rounds in its 2020-21 season.
Named the ADAC Opel e-Rally Cup, its first event will be as part of the ADAC Saarland-Pfalz Rally on Aug. 21-22, followed by a round as part of the ADAC Rallye Suedbayern (Sept. 26-27) and a double-header during the FIA World Rally Championship’s ADAC Rallye Deutschland on Oct. 15-18.
Six further events will complete the 2020-21 season in 2021 and will be announced at a later date.
Pre-season testing will begin with an ‘e-Rally Experience Day’ for teams to get acquainted with the cars at a currently unconfirmed location in the summer.
A second test will be held on Aug. 8 as part of the ADAC Rallye Oberehe, giving teams the opportunity to test their cars over 43 miles of rally stages in Rhineland-Palatinate.
