Andretti Autosport team owner Michael Andretti believes Red Bull Global Rallycross would be the “perfect place” to showcase electric vehicles, amid the series’ targeted expansion to an all-electric class for as early as next year.

Andretti, which joined GRC in 2014 as the first legacy team in the series, has claimed back-to-back championships with Scott Speed in the team’s two-car Volkswagen Beetle factory effort.

While a leading force in GRC, the legendary IndyCar squad has also been a key player in the FIA Formula E Championship, which has been regarded as the world’s first major electric racing series, with Andretti set to represent BMW in the championship beginning with the 2018-19 season.

With involvement in both emerging series, Andretti feels the the time is right for GRC to expand on the electric front.

“I think the future is pretty exciting and I think electric could be a big part of it,” Andretti said. “Many of us have come to the conclusion that GRC would be the perfect place to showcase electric vehicles.

“What you’re looking for out of these race cars is a lot of torque, which is what electric gives you, and the races are so short that range isn’t a concern.

“So rallycross is actually the perfect place for people to go out and say, ‘Wow, those electric cars really perform.'”

Few details have been revealed by series organizers since its initial announcement last year of an electric class, which would be a standalone series alongside the Supercar and GRC Lites classes.

Andretti, however, thinks there would be a strong correlation from the track to the road should it materialize.

“I think it will definitely help people understand the new technology more and maybe encourage fans to want to go out and buy an electric car,” he said.
