A two-car team from China has confirmed its entry to the Jaguar I-PACE eTROPHY, the world’s first all-electric series for production based cars.
Team China will field two cars in the championship, which begins in Ad Diriyah, Saudi Arabia on Dec. 15.
The team will support young Chinese drivers, giving them the chance to compete on the world stage in electric motorsport.
One car is sponsored by Baidu, one of the largest artificial intelligence and internet companies in the world, based in Beijing.
Baidu is a prominent investor in autonomous driving and works with several premium auto manufacturers in China, including Jaguar Land Rover.
The car will be driven by Yaqi Zhang, a Chinese racing driver who most recently competed in Formula Pilota China.
The second car is co-sponsored by Star Charge and Autohome. Star Charge is the largest electric vehicle charging platform operator in China, and Autohome is the leading online destination for Chinese car buyers.
Wang Tao, chief test driver at Autohome, will drive the car.
“We have five continents represented on the Jaguar I-PACE eTROPHY grid and a brilliant driver line-up, promising a really exciting first race,” said championship manager Marion Barnaby.
“Team China are a great addition to the grid with a stellar line up of sponsors and a focus on championing young drivers, and I’m really pleased to welcome them on board.”
Final entrants and details of where to watch the championship around the world will be announced shortly.
