Jimenez Sweeps to Saturday I-PACE Pole

Sergio Jimenez claimed his second Jaguar I-PACE eTROPHY pole position ahead of this afternoon’s second race of the season on the streets of Diriyah.

Reigning champion Jimenez peaked with a late lap of 1:30.891 to go just under half a second faster than Friday pole setter and race winner Simon Evans.

Jimenez’s time was just under four seconds faster than yesterday’s pole which was largely due to a slight track modification and improving grip levels on the Saudi track.

Evans led most of the session after posting a time of 1:31.374 in the 30-minute qualifying session in his Team Asia New Zealand Jaguar I-PACE until Jimenez’s late lap.

Alice Powell will start third after going one place better than her Friday qualifying effort. She set a best time of 1:31.456 in the Team Germany car.

Yaqi Zhang posted the best time in the Pro-Am class as he took his Jaguar China Racing car to a quickest lap of 1:31.873, a time which was good enough for fourth place overall.

Zhang’s teammate Chao Sun ended the session spectacularly as he suffered a punctured left rear tire after landing heavily while negotiating the curbs at the final corner.

Racing returnee Mario Haberfeld showed improved pace in the second of the Jaguar Brazil entries and sealed a fifth-place start with his final lap of the session.

The second round of the 2019-20 Jaguar I-PACE eTROPHY is scheduled to begin at 13.05 local time.
