Alexander Sims set the fastest lap on the final day of ABB FIA Formula E Championship pre-season testing at Valencia.

The BMW i Andretti Motorsport driver struck late in Friday afternoon’s three-hour session with a time of 1:17.402 that pipped reigning champion Jean-Eric Vergne by two-tenths of a second.

However, Sims’ last-ditch run wasn’t quite enough to lead the test overall, with his BMW team-mate Antonio Felix da Costa’s time of 1:16.977 holding out since Wednesday morning.

Sims did register the third-fastest lap outright, just behind Vergne and ahead of the Frenchman’s DS Techeetah team-mate Andre Lotterer.

In the Friday timing charts, Panasonic Jaguar Racing’s Mitch Evans finished four-tenths off the pace in third, while Pascal Wehrlein lapped fourth for Mahindra Racing.

Seven different teams were represented in the top seven places, with Maximilian Guenther running fifth for Dragon Racing ahead of Envision Virgin Racing’s Robin Frijns and HWA Racelab’s Gary Paffett.

All the leading times on Friday were set in the afternoon after rainy conditions affected the three-hour morning segment, which was topped by Da Costa’s 1:24.870 effort.

The afternoon session saw a handful of on-track stoppages, the most notable being for Felipe Massa who stopped his Venturi VFE05 at turn three after an error message flashed up on the car’s dashboard.

Nelson Piquet Jnr also caused a red flag by halting is Jaguar I-Type 3 to perform a cooling pump reset while out on the track.

So BMW did beat Audi during the pre-season tests. That wasn’t expected but a really exciting development. Eager for the 5th to start…
