Changes Made to Santiago Layout; Chicane Removed

A number of changes have been made to the Parque O’Higgins circuit ahead of next weekend’s Santiago E-Prix, including the removal of a tight chicane on the sweeping back straight.

A new circuit layout map (pictured below) shows several changes to the layout of the Chilean capital’s track for the third round of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship.

The series first used the Parque O’Higgins location last year after an initial race on tight streets in the center of the city.

The park proved a successful venue for Formula E, which has now taken advantage of the flexibility of using a larger area in order to make changes for the 2020 event.

The pit lane has been moved to the other side of the track, now on drivers’ left, and the inside of the circuit, and a tight chicane halfway along the sweeping back straight has been removed altogether.

This sets up an uninterrupted constant left-hander that constitutes a curved back straight but has been shortened by the repositioning of the two hairpins that make up the final part of the track.

These hairpins, that effectively produce three parallel sections of track zig-zagging back on itself, have been moved to the other side of the pit straight that they feed into, and will now constitute a right-hander into a left-hander.

Elsewhere, an additional corner has been placed at the very start of the lap, setting up a left/right sequence instead of the original long right-hander corner at Turn 1.

The result is a total of 11 corners, three fewer than last year’s layout.

The removal of the title chicane is in line with a desire for fewer tight chicanes on Formula E tracks after a series of major crashes last season caused by tight corners.

Changes are also set to be made to Formula E’s configuration of the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City for the race after Santiago.
