Oliver Rowland posted the fastest lap of a damp opening practice session for the ABB FIA Formula E Hong Kong E-Prix.
The Nissan e.dams driver pipped long-time session leader Andre Lotterer with a 1:09.283 flyer late in the 40-minute session to go three tenths clear at the top of the timing charts.
Lotterer settled for second-quickest on a 1:09.653, while his DS Techeetah teammate Jean-Eric Vergne followed closely with the third-best time of 1:09.744.
Rowland’s teammate Sebastien Buemi came through in fourth, while the Audi-powered ABT Team Schaeffler and Envision Virgin cars driven by Daniel Abt and Robin Frijns rounded out the top six, respectively.
The fastest six all dipped under the 1-minute 10s barrier on the 1.15-mile Hong Kong street course, with Jose Maria Lopez running best of the rest in seventh on a 1:10.070.
Times fell near the end of FP1 after heavy morning showers raised questions about the state of running on Sunday morning.
No major incidents were reported despite the conditions, although the yellow flags were brought out twice when Nelson Piquet Jr. and Gary Paffett both experienced brief on-track stoppages.
Additionally, both Envision Virgin cars had brushes against the walls near the end, with Bird and Frijns each continuing on their way despite hitting the circuit’s outer limits.
Practice 2 is scheduled to get underway at 10 a.m. local time (9 p.m. EST).
