Nico Rosberg has revealed he has an investment in the ABB FIA Formula E Championship after making public that he will demonstrate the series’ new car next month.
The 2016 Formula 1 World Champion is believed to have become close to the championship and acquired his investment last summer.
Rosberg visited Formula E Holdings’ offices in London in July and then experienced his first E-Prix at the Hong Kong opener in December.
Rosberg’s demonstration in the Season Five Formula E car will take place just before the Berlin E-Prix on Saturday, May 19. The German will get approximately ten minutes of running with a car.
“I’m really excited to get behind the wheel of the Gen 2 car,” said Rosberg.
“It will be great to experience this high-performance e-mobility car and let’s see if I still have it in me! It makes it even more special that I’m able to do this at the Berlin E-Prix, as I’ve always loved racing in my home country – Germany.
“Since my retirement, I’ve become very interested in the e-mobility movement and its potential to positively impact our society and our planet.
“I’ve therefore also long believed in the potential of Formula E and came on board as an investor some time ago.”
Formula E boss Alejandro Agag acclaimed the F1 champion’s commitment to sustainable racing and EV technology and said it was a “great moment” for the all-electric championship.
“To see a name like Rosberg taking the wheel of the Gen 2 car in front of the German fans in Berlin is a great moment for the series,” said Agag.
“He’s such an incredible ambassador for world motorsport and a champion – so it’s also another fantastic endorsement for the ABB FIA Formula E Championship to have Nico as an investor and shareholder of Formula E.”
An investment in the championship would not preclude Rosberg taking up other appointments such as a role with the Mercedes operation in the future.
Some drivers are known to also have a stake in the championship and SECA, the owner of the Techeetah team, is also an investor in Formula E.
The HWA operation which has been tipped to enter Formula E next season is expected to announce its program shortly.
It is likely to utilize a customer powertrain which could be known as a ZF in deference to the ZF Group which has designed and built the season five package which was recently tested by Venturi.
ZF has been a long-time technical partner of HWA and Mercedes.
