Techeetah Team Principal Mark Preston says his team’s main strategy in the New York City E-Prix will be to focus on Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler’s performance in an attempt to score both the teams’ and drivers’ championships.
While Jean-Eric Vergne leads Sam Bird by 23 points heading in to the crucial New York weekend, Techeetah enjoys a 33-point gap over Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler ahead of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship finale.
With Audi drivers dominating the last two E-Prixs in Berlin and Zurich, Preston believes that shadowing the German manufacturer could be the decisive factor to confirm success in both championships.
“The target has to be match race the Audis basically,” Preston told e-racing365. “If we can stick with them then we can hold them off for the championships.
“It is really us and Audi as I see it, so we have to watch two people; Audi in the teams’ championship and obviously Bird for the drivers’.
“We just need to focus on matching the Audis because they are going to be the fast ones if the last few races are anything to go by.”
With Mahindra now mathematically out of the teams’ title race, DS Virgin is the only team other than Techeetah and Audi that could claim the championship.
However, the British team has a 62-point deficit and with a maximum of 94 to play for, a title win looks highly unlikely.
Preston thinks it will be as crucial as ever for Andre Lotterer to continue his rich vein of form which has seen him contribute 38 points in the last four races.
“Having two competitive drivers is one of the key reasons why we can win both [titles],” said Preston.
“Both our drivers need to be up the front and in the hunt for the top six positions at least. If we can do this we would be alright with the leads we have.
“As we have said from the start, a really great powertrain, two good drivers, a good team and the desire to succeed is the name of this game.
“Trouble is that is what Audi and a few other teams have as well, so we are not alone in that game. But yes, Andre is doing a great job and he is a really, really solid guy and a great support to JEV at the moment.
“We just have to ensure that we make no mistakes, which has been the hallmark to most of our season and hopefully we have got all of our bad luck out of the way now.”
