Nissan has parted ways with Alexander Albon less than three weeks before the opening round of the 2018-19 ABB FIA Formula E Championship.
A statement from the Japanese manufacturer read that “Nissan e.dams and Albon have agreed to part ways with Albon exiting his contract to take up a different opportunity in motorsport.”
The FIA Formula 2 racer, who picked up four victories with DAMS on his way to finishing third in the 2018 standings, was first announced as Sebastien Buemi’s new Formula E team-mate in September.
However, Albon’s anticipated debut in the electric series had been cast into doubt recently following an approach from the Toro Rosso Formula 1 team.
It was understood that the possibility of a shared program between the two single seater championships would be unlikely.
The uncertainty over Albon’s status with Nissan e.dams resulted in the team scrambling Oliver Rowland to take part in the Valencia pre-season test.
Nissan will confirm Albon’s replacement for Season Five, which gets underway next month in Saudi Arabia, at its Formula E launch event on Friday.
