Robin Frijns will make his ABB FIA Formula E Championship return this season with Envision Virgin Racing, joining Sam Bird at the new-look team.
The Audi factory driver left MS Amlin Andretti at the end of the 2016-17 campaign after two seasons when BMW became a partner of the team but returns to the series through Virgin’s customer deal with Audi.
E-racing365 reported in August that he was favorite to replace Alex Lynn alongside Bird.
“I’m very excited to be returning to Formula E with Envision Virgin Racing. It’s great to be joining such a strong team and with the work we’ve already completed, it’s clear we have a very good package,” he said.
“The live event at Silverstone has showcased all that the team can do and it’s great to be a part of that. We now look ahead to pre-season testing, where we’ll be able to better gauge our on-track performance.”
Bird, meanwhile, remains with the team for a fifth season after finishing third in the drivers’ standings in 2017-18.
The 31-year-old did have significant interest from several other teams, including BMW which is believed to have made him an offer for a drive.
He is one of only two drivers, along with Lucas di Grassi, to have won a race in every season of Formula E, with a total of seven race victories under his belt.
“It’s great to be remaining with the team for a fifth season,” he said.
“The relationship we have developed over the last 45 races has been incredible and I’m excited to see it continue to strengthen.
“Season Five is a new era for every team – with the introduction of the Gen 2 car – but particularly for us, as we are now joined by Envision Group.
“The team has worked tirelessly over the summer and are ready to return to the track for pre-season testing.”
