Lucas di Grassi set the fastest lap during the opening practice session for this afternoon’s ABB FIA Formula E Championship Monaco E-Prix.

The Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler driver produced a time of 50.183 to top the leaderboard, 0.072 seconds ahead of Sam Bird in his Audi-powered Envision Virgin machine.

Mitch Evans lapped third-quickest for Panasonic Jaguar Racing on a 50.292 with BMW i Andretti Motorsport’s Alexander Sims slotting into fourth with a time of 50.330.

Rounding out the top five was two-time Monaco E-Prix winner Sebastien Buemi, who laid down a 50.347 in his e.dams-run Nissan IM01.

Less than two tenths of a second separated the five quickest drivers, while the top 10 fell under a half-second blanket.

Additionally, the top 18 drivers in the 22-car field lapped within a second of di Grassi’s marker around the 1.09-mile Monaco harborfront circuit.

No incidents were reported in the 45-minute early morning session, which ran dry throughout.

Track action resumes at 10 a.m. local time (4 a.m. eastern) for the second Free Practice session ahead of today’s ninth E-Prix of the 2018-19 season.
