Nyck de Vries has emerged as the favorite to secure a drive with the Mercedes EQ Formula E team for the forthcoming ABB FIA Formula E Championship season.

The Dutch driver has already tested for the team and is now understood to be the most likely driver to partner Stoffel Vandoorne at the new team for the 2019-20 season.

De Vries currently leads the FIA Formula 2 Championship standings for ART after scoring three victories. He has also competed in the the FIA World Endurance Championship this year with Racing Team Nederland.

Mercedes EQ team principal Ian James recently told e-racing365 that de Vries could get an additional test after his initial run with the team which is believed to have taken place at the Mallorca test track.

“It is correct that Nyck already tested for us and it could be that he will get another possibility – like other drivers as well,” James told e-racing365.

Initially it was believed that de Vries could be in the frame for a test and development role with the team but it now appears that he has emerged as the likely partner to Vandoorne in recent weeks.

The 24-year-old brings significant experience in driving Formula E machinery having been a preferred test driver for chassis designer and developer Spark Racing Technologies.

In addition to this running, de Vries has also tested for Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler and NIO in the last 18 months and has also been considered for race seat roles by teams in the past.

Should de Vries’ expected appointment be confirmed next month it remains unclear if Gary Paffett will be given another role with the team.

Mercedes EQ, which is testing this week again in Mallorca with Vandoorne and Edoardo Mortara, is set to announce its lineup on Sept. 11 at the IAA Frankfurt Motor Show.

Now that Ocon have found an F1 seat for 2020 (Renault) it is obvious that the best among those tested for the team (as it seems the best was Nyk De Vries) plus Nico Hulkenberg will be the favourites for the remaining Mercedes Formula E seat of 2020-21 season.
But Hulkenberg will possibly switch to Haas taking Grosjean’s seat for 2020.
    Let’s wait and see.
