The rallycross specification of the electric smart EQ fortwo e-cup supermini touring cars was demonstrated during the Rally Italia Sardegna earlier this month.
Several smart e-cup cars took to the Porto Conte Natural Park on the Italian island to demonstrate their rallycross trim while promoting clean energy and motoring.
The demonstration was completely green, with energy for charging the cars coming from renewable sources within the park.
It took place during the Italian round of the FIA World Rally Championship, held on June 13-16 across Sardinia.
The smart EQ fortwo e-cup currently consists of a touring car championship throughout Italy, while plans were revealed earlier this year to explore a potential rallycross series in addition.
The cars’ rallycross specification was demonstrated in March, although plans to run a second championship as part of the Italian Rallycross Championship were put on hold.
“I am very satisfied with what we have been able to demonstrate, the great commitment of ACI Sport in the field of renewable energy, the practical demonstration of what zero-impact motorsport can be and how much fun it can be anyway,” commented Raffaele Pelillo, ACI Sport’s manager for alternative energies.
“We are only at the beginning of a long but interesting road, with our friends from smart EQ fortwo e-cup and all the partners who supported us we can go very far and create something great.”
The smart EQ fortwo e-cup is back in action next weekend with a pair of races at Adria.
