Jordi Gene tests Cupra e-Racer in Spain, development program underway…

Jordi Gene recently tested the Cupra e-Racer at Parcmotor Castelloli, beginning the all-electric touring car’s development program.

The Spaniard drove the e-Racer, which is currently the only car built to E TCR specifications, for a series of tests carried out by the Cupra technical team.

It comes just weeks after Croatian electric hypercar manufacturer Rimac Automobili joined forces with SEAT’s Cupra brand in a technical partnership.

Gene’s test was preceded by a shakedown near Zagreb in order to test the integration of the battery pack into the car.

Cupra and Gene tested the maximum output of the electric motors, power management regarding temperatures, and the car’s drivability, by closely examining accelerator response, the brake system and energy recovery.

“It delivers impressive acceleration, and the excellent distribution of its batteries gives it a low centre of gravity with a much better than expected driving feel,” commented FIA World Touring Car Championship race winner Gene.

“The only scope for improvement we see is with the braking, as it is obviously a heavier car and more difficult to stop with precision.”

Testing will continue in September, when engineers and technicians will focus on lap times and outright pace.

“We want to prove that this is the future of competition and that an E TCR car can be as competitive as a petrol-powered Touring Car and even more,” explained Cupra Racing Director Jaime Puig.

“We hope the track tests we are performing will encourage other brands to commit to the E-TCR championship.”

E-racing365 understands that initial E TCR events are planned for 2019 ahead of a full season in 2020, and that TCR promoter WSC Ltd. is looking to bring other brands into the series.

“The series will be open to other brands,” WSC CEO Marcello Lotti told e-racing365 earlier this year. “We are working now, and we have just started to work with other brands, which are interested.

“At the moment, on the table, is to start next season and close at the end of the season. After that, make a really full program from 2020.”

    are they using a road car adapted to EV power or it’s just a common chassis with a Seat Leon style like body shell? Personalty do prefer the first approach as it will force manufacturers to offer the road car to begin with; the second approach has no appeal to me as the EGT championship and the e-WRX will make use of this formula…
