Cupra has become the first brand to confirm drivers for the new Pure ETCR series, revealing on Thursday evening that its test drivers Mattias Ekström and Jordi Gene will race its cars.
Ekström (pictured above) became the brand’s ‘e-ambassador’ last year and has completed the majority of its test mileage in recent months, while Gene was its initial test driver.
Gene drove the Cupra e-Racer in its debut public demo at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in October 2018.
“I’m so excited to be a part of this,” said Ekström.
“The first event will be at Goodwood and from being at the Pure ETCR launch in Paris, I know it’s a great place to be racing. I’m also very excited to be having Jordi as a teammate.”
Ekström is a two-time DTM champion and the 2016 FIA World Rallycross Champion, while Gene was a long-time FIA World Touring Car Championship and TCR International Series driver for SEAT.
The announcement was made at the launch of Cupra’s new headquarters near Barcelona, next to parent company SEAT’s corporate headquarters.
An updated version of its Cupra e-Racer ETCR car was also presented with a number of updates, largely to the car’s aerodynamics.
The initial version of the e-Racer was presented at the Geneva International Motor Show two years ago, when the ETCR platform itself was first revealed.
ETCR’s debut race plans were confirmed on Wednesday at the launch of Pure ETCR in Paris. It will get underway in July for the first of six events around the world, with a demo season ending in January 2021.
Alongside the updated Cupra e-Racer, the Spanish brand also launched its new petrol TCR car, the Leon Competicion.
