British business StreetDrone has officially launched the sale of its unique, affordable autonomous vehicle,  the StreetDrone ONE, at the annual GPU Technology Conference in Munich recently.

The vehicle is designed to address the growing issue of diverging efforts in the field of autonomous technology, which has led to siloed research and growing costs for businesses across the rapidly expanding sector.

Built by a team of ex-F1 engineers near Oxford, StreetDrone ONE is equipped with six HD cameras, 4G connectivity and powered by a NVIDIA Drive PX AV Computer, which supports smarter data collection and sharing.

It has been specifically designed to test both engineering and software solutions that will appear on road cars in the coming decade.

StreetDrone is the brainchild of current Techeetah Formula E boss Mark Preston, who as CEO of the company is pushing the idea in to the automotive industry.

“What makes StreetDrone ONE so unique is that it allows businesses to focus on their specific area of interest in the self-driving market and customize the test-bed to their requirements,” said Preston.

“This significantly reduces the complexity of research and saves both time and money as the industry seeks to rapidly expand.

“We’re using F1 technology to gain new insights into how we can make autonomous cars safer, more efficient and more reliable, while putting them to the test in real-world conditions on the roads.”

Priced at £49,500 ($65,000 USD), the StreetDrone ONE has also be designed for use by engineering students to test existing software and design their own to make future autonomous cars more efficient, safe and affordable, all the while gaining practical industry experience in the process.

Mike Potts, Managing Director of StreetDrone, commented: “This is a very fragmented marketplace and we’re trying to build a suite of standardized tools so that technology companies can meet the growing demand for autonomous products.

“This is a new but very lucrative industry, and StreetDrone ONE can help get new products to market faster.”

A recent study predicted that the driverless vehicles industry will be worth over $7 trillion by 2050, with 250 million hours of commuting time saved per year.

Deliveries of the StreetDrone ONE, which is based on the Renault Twizy electric vehicle, are expected to begin before the end of the year.
