Agag: I-PACE eTROPHY “Fantastic” to Drive

ABB FIA Formula E Championship CEO Alejandro Agag says the Jaguar I-PACE eTROPHY car is “fantastic” to drive and will be an important addition to the electric racing bill in Season Five.

Agag gave the I-PACE eTROPHY its first public run around the 1.4-mile Berlin Tempelhof circuit ahead of Saturday’s E-Prix in the German capital.

The single-make electric production series will make its debut at the start of the 2018-19 season, supporting Formula E at 10 events with an anticipated maximum grid of 20 cars.

“It was fantastic fun and these cars are going to be fantastic for the eTROPHY,” Agag told e-racing365 following his laps behind the wheel on Saturday afternoon.

“I had a good feeling with the car. The most fantastic thing is the braking – you can go into corners as late as you want. The car behaves incredibly well.

“It was a super good run, and I stayed on the racing trajectory for some laps and did a bit drifting on some laps, so it was great.”

The Jaguar I-PACE eTROPHY is the racing version of the recently launched Jaguar I-PACE, using the same 90kWh lithium ion battery found in the production model.

Agag said that the series, which is the first of its kind, will help enhance the Formula E weekend product ahead of the fifth season.

“We want to improve the production cars on the street and it is great to have the support race to showcase that,” said Agag.

“I think we have had a super competition [with Formula E] for a long time, and now Season Five is coming with Jaguar and the eTROPHY, we couldn’t be in a better place.”

Jaguar Racing director James Barclay added that the championship, which has reportedly attracted interest from multiple high-profile teams, will be an important addition to motorsport in general.

“The first battery electric production racing cars will definitely be part of the future,” Barclay told e-racing365.

“This car, working closely with the FIA, will start to set some of the blueprint for future production-based electric cars, and that’s something we’re particularly proud of.

“I think this is going to be a fantastic addition, not only to Formula E but to motorsport, and it’s been fantastic to show the car publicly for the first time.”

    If a few years ago anyone had told me that Jaguar would be in the forefront of EVs development I would laugh. But here we’re and apart from Tesla that created the market for compelling electric vehicles, Jaguar is the only player to date to challenge the American startup with a long range fully electric luxury Crossover…
