The Venturi Formula E team has confirmed Eduardo Mortara as teammate to Maro Engel for the new season of the FIA Formula E Championship.

The Monegasque team, which finished ninth from ten teams in last year’s standings, has chosen Mortara after he completed an impressive initial test with the team in the South of France in the summer and then again at the official Valencia test earlier this month.

As revealed by e-racing365, Mortara emerged as favorite to take the seat previously filled by Tom Dillmann after impressing in testing.

Mortara, a Mercedes factory driver, has raced in the DTM for the German manufacturer this season after switching from Audi at the end last year.

It remains unclear if Mercedes have been lobbying the team to take Mortara, who comes with a strong reputation as a talented street circuit driver following two Macau F3 Grand Prix wins and a victory at the Macau GT Cup in 2013.

Venturi have been in discussions with the Mercedes-affiliated HWA entity over the last few months.

HWA is believed to be the company that will manage and run the Mercedes Formula E operation a year ahead of schedule when the German manufacturer officially enters Formula E in Season Six.

Engel, meanwhile, gets a second term with the team after impressing in several races last season.

The German, who is also a Mercedes-contracted driver, finished 17th in the standings, with a best result of fifth at Monaco. This lowly position was largely due to the fact that half of his debut season was significantly compromised by chronic gearbox problems.

The team this season features a full ZF gearbox design, but initial tests have again involved technical issues.
